What are synthetic oils?
A synthetic lubricant contains more highly refined base oils than those used in conventional mineral oils, offering excellent protection and performance. Synthetic motor oils offer a host of benefits that help keep engines running at optimum performance for many years. To understand synthetic motor oils, let's look at the origin of motor oils.

There are two basic types of lubricants:
Conventional mineral oils - are the traditional lubricants
Synthetic lubricants - are the ones that are growing in popularity
Both lubricant types are made from crude oil. The difference is that the synthetic oils are made by more advanced refining processes and are of a higher purity and quality than conventional mineral oils. This not only removes more impurities, it means that individual molecules in the oil are adapted to the demands of modern engines. These custom molecules offer higher levels of protection and performance.

What's so great about synthetic oils?
The performance of synthetic motor oils is usually more robust, especially in terms of low temperature pumpability and high temperature stability and protection against deposits. These attributes can help with reduced engine wear, fuel economy potential and long engine life.

Synthetic motor oils have been developed specifically to cope with extreme conditions in modern engines. They are much more "free-flowing" than traditional mineral oils. The biggest advantage is greatly increased engine protection. When an engine first starts, a mineral oil takes time to circulate causing the friction between unlubricated parts to cause wear. In contrast, synthetic lubricants start circulating immediately to protect every moving part in the engine.

Synthetic motor oils can also help improve fuel economy. During the warm-up period of a typical truck ride, mineral oils are thicker and move slower making the engine thirstier and less efficient. However, synthetic materials are allowed to work much faster, so that the engine reaches maximum operating efficiency much earlier. Another advantage of synthetic materials is that they are cleaner - helping to reduce engine emissions compared to conventional mineral oils.
