High-performance adhesives for demanding applications in defence and drone technology

Permabond offers advanced adhesives and sealants for defence, ammunition, UAVs and drone technology. The products are developed for demanding applications where strength, lightweighting, vibration resistance, sealing and long-term reliability are critical.

Permabond adhesives for defence, ammunition and drone technology

Within defence, aerospace, ammunition and unmanned systems, high demands are placed on materials, production and long-term reliability. Components must withstand vibration, temperature fluctuations, moisture, chemicals and mechanical stress – often while weight, efficiency and production speed also need to be optimised.

Permabond offers a broad range of high-performance industrial adhesives and sealants for demanding applications in the defence industry, ammunition production, UAVs, drones, Urban Air Mobility and VTOL systems. The products are developed to provide strong and durable bonds in materials such as composites, metals, rubber, nylon, 3D-printed plastics, polypropylene, polyethylene, carbon fibre and other difficult-to-bond materials.

Adhesive technology for safety-critical applications

In the defence industry, adhesives and sealants are used in everything from body armour, helmets and lightweight vehicle components to military electronics, communications equipment, wiring harnesses in aircraft fuselages and sealing oxygen systems in aircraft. Permabond’s range includes structural acrylic adhesives, epoxy adhesives, cyanoacrylates, anaerobic sealants and UV-curing solutions.

Several products are developed for specific performance requirements, such as low outgassing, high temperature resistance, impact and vibration resistance, rapid strength development, thermal conductivity and the ability to join low surface energy materials. This makes them particularly relevant in applications where traditional mechanical fasteners can add weight, create point loads or increase production time.

Defence and military equipment

For defence applications, Permabond offers products including MH052, ET5422, ET5424, ET5441, TA4550 and TA4611. They are used, for example, for sealing oxygen lines, composite bonding, structural bonding, electronics, wiring harnesses, Kevlar®, nylon and low surface energy plastics.

One example is Permabond MH052, an anaerobic thread sealant used for sealing valves in oxygen supply systems in military aircraft. Another is Permabond TA4550, which is used for bonding nylon and composite components in body armour and helmets, where high strength and good impact resistance are critical.

Sealing solutions for ammunition production

Within ammunition production, Permabond offers specialised sealants for sealing between bullet and casing, for both live and blank ammunition. The products are developed to provide good coverage, low viscosity, fast curing and the possibility of UV inspection.

Examples of products include A1024, A1062 and UV7134. A1024 is a low-viscosity anaerobic sealant for sealing between bullet and casing, while UV7134 is developed for sealing blank ammunition. A1062 combines anaerobic curing with UV curing for a fast process, visible control and additional protection against moisture ingress.

As an alternative to bitumen-based sealants and lacquer, Permabond offers solutions that simplify production, improve process control and provide effective protection against moisture ingress. The products require no heat curing, are solvent-free, cure quickly and have built-in UV fluorescence for easy quality control.

Adhesives for UAVs, drones and Urban Air Mobility

The rapid development of drones, UAVs, Urban Air Mobility and VTOL creates new requirements for lightweighting, structural strength, thermal management and electronics protection. Permabond adhesives are used to bond composites, metals and engineering plastics, as well as for battery assembly, electronics encapsulation, vibration damping, environmental sealing and bonding e-motor components.

In drone applications, Permabond offers products including ET5422, ET5424, ET5428, ET5429, TA4550, TA4551, MT382, MT3836, ET5441, HM162, TA437, TA459, ES566 and UV643. The products cover applications such as 3D-printed components, composite frames, bearings, electronics encapsulation, camera lenses, threadlocking, composite repair, e-motor magnets and thermal management.

The right adhesive choice starts with the application

The choice of adhesive or sealant depends on materials, load, temperature, production process, curing time requirements and environmental exposure. It is therefore important to start with the application and test the product under actual operating conditions.

G A Lindberg helps you select the right Permabond product based on technical requirements, material combinations and production conditions.

Frequently asked questions about Permabond adhesives for defence, ammunition and drones

What types of adhesives are used in the defence industry?

In the defence industry, structural acrylic adhesives, epoxy adhesives, cyanoacrylates, anaerobic sealants and UV-curing adhesives are used, among others. The choice depends on materials, load, temperature requirements, environmental exposure and production process.

What materials can Permabond adhesives be used for?

Permabond offers solutions for bonding materials such as composites, metals, rubber, nylon, 3D-printed plastics, polypropylene, polyethylene, carbon fibre, Kevlar® and other difficult-to-bond materials.

Which Permabond products are relevant for ammunition?

For ammunition production, products such as A1024, A1062 and UV7134 are highlighted. The products are used for sealing between bullet and casing, as well as for sealing primers and crimps.

Which adhesives are used in UAVs and drones?

In UAVs, drones and Urban Air Mobility, adhesives are used for structural composite bonding, 3D-printed components, electronics encapsulation, threadlocking, e-motor magnets, thermal management and camera lenses. Examples of products include ET5422, ET5424, ET5428, ET5429, TA4550, TA4551, MT382, MT3836, ET5441, HM162, TA437, TA459, ES566 and UV643.

Why are adhesives used instead of mechanical fasteners?

Adhesives can contribute to lower weight, more even stress distribution, sealing, vibration damping and the ability to join different materials. They can also reduce the need for drilling, screwing or riveting in sensitive components.

How do you choose the right adhesive for a safety-critical application?

The right adhesive is selected based on material combination, temperature, load, chemical exposure, curing method, production flow and requirements for long-term reliability. G A Lindberg provides technical advice and product selection support based on the requirements of the application.
